Arch Stone Villa by awsmberg stays
Overview
Arch Stone Villa is a two-storey house on open ground at Debari, outside Udaipur, with a private pool, a sunken fire pit and the Aravalli hills rising directly beyond the wall.
The house is let whole — every room, the pool, the pavilion and the roof terrace go to one booking, so there is nobody else on the property.
It is built with tall arched windows in black frames under grey tiled roofs, on a walled plot with lawn on three sides. The pool runs along the front, with a sheet of water falling off the eaves into it, and a covered pavilion beside it holding a dining table and a charpai for the afternoon.
Behind the house the ground steps down into a sunken fire pit walled in local stone, with built-in seating and globe lamps around it — which is where everyone ends up after dark.
Inside there is a full kitchen, a sitting room with an arched niche for the television, and stairs up to a roof terrace that looks straight at the ridge. The sun sets behind those hills.

The building
Two storeys, tall arched windows in black frames under grey tiled roofs. The pool runs along the front of the house with a sheet of water falling off the eaves into it, and a covered pavilion beside it for the hours when nobody wants to be in the sun.
The fire pit
Behind the house the ground steps down into a sunken pit walled in local stone, with built-in seating and globe lamps around it. This is where everybody ends up after dark. It is the single most-photographed part of the house and the reason groups stay up later here than they meant to.
Inside
A full kitchen, a sitting room with an arched niche for the television, and stairs up to a roof terrace that looks straight at the ridge. The sun sets behind those hills, which makes the roof the place to be for the half-hour before dinner.
Who it suits
Groups who want to be outside. Between the pool, the pavilion, the lawn and the fire pit, most of the house's good rooms have no roof — so it rewards the cooler months and the evenings, and it is a better house for a celebration than for a quiet week of reading.
It is a two-storey house, so if somebody in the party would rather not take stairs, look at Casa Arvita, which is all on one level.
Practicalities
A cook is on site; you plan the food with them. A driver can be arranged and is worth it after dark. Other houses nearby are on villas in Udaipur.
