Jawai Riva Resort by awsmberg stays
Overview
Jawai Riva Resort is a small camp of canvas tents near Jawai Bandh in Pali district, in the granite hill country that has become one of the few places in India where leopards are seen regularly in the open.
The tents are the point. Each sits on its own raised plinth with steps up to a covered veranda, white canvas with a scalloped valance, banana palms and young date palms planted between them.
Inside they are properly built rooms — block-printed fabric walls, a ceiling printed with gold stars, rugs over the floor, a hardwood bed, air conditioning and a lamp on each side.
The stone terrace looks out at the hills. In the afternoon it is a bench with cushions and a pot of tea; after dark the trees are lit from below and a table goes out under them.
Jawai itself is a reservoir built under Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, ringed with granite outcrop rather than desert. The leopards live among those rocks alongside the villages, and the water brings birds through the cooler months.

People who arrive braced for camping tend to describe it afterwards as the best night's sleep of the trip. What the canvas gives you is the sound — wind on rock, birds before dawn, the night close by.

About Jawai
The reservoir was built under Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, and the country around it is granite outcrop rather than desert — which is what makes it look unlike the rest of Rajasthan. The leopards live among those rocks alongside the villages, an arrangement that has held for generations and that local herders find unremarkable. The water draws a great many birds through the cooler months.
Who it suits
Anyone who likes being outdoors. Photographers, for the light on the rock. Birdwatchers, for the dam. Families with children old enough to be quiet at dusk. Couples who want somewhere genuinely remote without it being uncomfortable.
It suits people looking for nightlife or shopping not at all.
Practicalities
Bring layers — mornings are far colder than afternoons in the dry season — walking shoes, and binoculars if you own them. More on staying in Jawai.
